Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the money-saved estimate?

The calculator multiplies your per-cigarette cost by the number of cigarettes you would have smoked since your quit date. Accuracy depends on how consistent your pre-quit smoking and pack price were.

How is "life regained" calculated?

Research published in the BMJ (2000) estimates that each cigarette shortens a smoker's life by roughly 11 minutes on average. We multiply that by the number of cigarettes avoided. It's a rough estimate, not a medical prediction.

When do health benefits start?

Within 20 minutes of quitting, your heart rate and blood pressure begin to drop. Within 12 hours, carbon monoxide levels in your blood return to normal. Benefits continue for years — see the milestones panel for details.

Does this work if I vape or use nicotine replacements?

This calculator is focused on traditional cigarettes. The money-saved math still works if you enter your equivalent cost, but the health timeline assumes you've stopped inhaling combusted tobacco.
